What is Mental Fitness?

While definitions vary, I view mental fitness through the same lens as physical fitness: through consistent, targeted exercises that build resilience. Just as athletes train muscles to perform under pressure, PQ® develops your mind's capacity to navigate challenges with clarity.

The Positive Intelligence® (PQ®) modality, developed in recent years by Shirzad Chamine and the PQ Team in San Francisco is a program designed to improve your mental well-being by strengthening your mental muscles.

Its focus is enhancing your ability to respond to life’s challenges with a positive rather than a negative mindset. This is achieved by identifying and weakening self-sabotaging inner voices (Saboteurs) and strengthening your positive, resourceful self (Sage).

My experience going through the 7-week PQ training was literally life-changing. 90% of the individuals I’ve guided through this program, privately or members of a company’s team, have experienced similar results. I believe you can too.

Do You Have These Mental Habits?

We all sometimes:

  • Worry too much about small mistakes (Hello, Stickler!)
  • Get upset when others work slower than you (Controller alert!)
  • Push yourself so hard until you’re exhausted (Hyper-Achiever mode)

These automatic reactions are Saboteurs – mental habits that create stress and hold you back. The good news? You can rewire your brain and change them.

Saboteurs & Sage Underlying Strengths

Saboteurs are mental habits with a dark side. These mental patterns once helped our species survive, but today they can trigger automatic reactions that work against us. Left unchecked, they sabotage our potential. The key? Recognize them—then shift to your Sage’s wisdom.

Here’s how to spot both sides:

Saboteur Sage Strengths Saboteur Abuses
Avoider Easy-going, flexible, adaptable Procrastinates, avoids conflict
Controller Confident, decisive, persistent Overly confrontational, resists influence
Hyper-Achiever Driven, goal-oriented, pragmatic Neglects relationships for achievement
Hyper-Rational Deep insight through analysis Over-relies on logic, ignores emotions
Hyper-Vigilant Alert to real risks, sensitive Anxious, fixates on worst-case scenarios
Pleaser Empathetic, loving, generous Over-gives, resents own unmet needs
Stickler Organized, high standards, detail-oriented Perfectionistic, overly self-critical
Restless Energetic, curious, spontaneous Spreads too thin, lacks follow-through
Victim Emotionally aware, introspective Focuses on pain, seeks attention through moodiness
